Mamaidh Colorwork Cowl

Updated: Jul 14

I designed this cowl last year in honor of Mother's Day (US) to be a companion piece for the Mamaidh Colorwork Slouch. I gave both of them to my own mother as gifts, and it made me incredibly happy to see how much use she had given them this past winter season. My family takes an early winter hunting trip, so this cowl kept my mom's face nice and toasty- safe from the wind's biting chill.

Since it's release, I have seen this cowl knit up in a worsted weight (size 4) yarn, and it looks SO cozy! If you do opt to substitute a worsted weight for the recommended DK, just keep in mind that it may affect your gauge which will change the final dimensions of your cowl.

As with all of our patterns, you can opt to purchase an AD-FREE PDF version that will also include instructions on how to steam block using an iron and towel as well as charted colorwork instructions.

Now, enough chit-chat. Let's get started!

You will need:

  • US 5 (3.75 mm) 24" circular needles

  • DK weight yarn with 247 yds in the Main Color (MC) and 120 yds in the Contrast Color (CC)

  • Darning needle & scissors

  • Stitch markers

  • Iron & towel for steam blocking

Gauge: 25 stitches x 29 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in the colorwork pattern after blocking.

Finished Dimensions:

12.5” / 32 cm wide x 10.5” / 26.5 cm tall

Begin:

With MC, cast on 156 stitches using cast on of your choice. Place a beginning of round (BOR) marker and join to work in the round.

2x2 Ribbed Round: [Purl 2, knit 2] around.

Repeat 2x2 Ribbed Round 10 more times.

Main Body:

Round 1: Knit to end of row

Round 2: Repeat Row 1

Round 3: Knit 30, [place marker, knit 30] three times. The markers will mark the beginning of repeats for the colorwork pattern.
