Mamaidh Colorwork Slouch

Updated: Jul 14

The Mamaidh Colorwork Slouch was my first ever published pattern and the first knitting pattern that I ever designed. It definitely has a very special place in my heart, so I'm excited to be bringing the FREE blog version to you this week! You can purchase the ad-free printable version that includes instructions for a tubular cast on, as well as the original colorwork chart and a customizable colorwork chart on Ravelry or in our online store!

My muses are those close to me, so it’s no surprise to me that one of my first designs would be inspired by the amazing woman that brought me into this world. “Mamaidh” is one of the Scottish Gaelic words for “mother”, which is fitting since the central motif to this design is the Celtic motherhood knot. This specific design was made for my own mother, and is highly symbolic of her life. Surrounding the focal piece are different dots signifying the children she has, the children she has lost, her own mother, God, and her loving relationship with her husband.

Now that you know the story behind the design, let's get started!

You will need:

  • 163 yds / 149.5 m of DK weight yarn for the Main Color (MC)

  • 46 yds / 42.5 m of DK weight yarn for the Contrast Color (CC)

  • 16" circular needles in sizes 3.5 mm (A), 3.75 mm (B), and 4.0 mm (C)

  • DPNs in size (B)

  • pompom (optional)
