Mitsuuroko Socks

These socks are knit from the top down with a slip stitch heel flap and square toe shaping. Instructions are included for modifying for large lower calves.

Gauge & Sizing

To determine which size to make, first measure around the widest part of your foot and do the size that gives you the closest to 0.5” / 1 cm of negative ease. If you have wide calves, measure your lower calf as well (about 5” / 12.5 cm above your ankle), and choose which size to make based off of that measurement.

There are only two stitch count instructions included, so the differences in size will be obtained by a difference in gauge. The corresponding gauge for each size will be listed below.

The sample was made in size 2.

Sizes 1 - 3 (4 - 6):

1. 7” / 18 cm circumference

2. 8” / 20.5 cm circumference

3. 9” / 23 cm circumference

4. 10” / 25.5 cm circumference

5. 11” / 28 cm circumference

6. 12” / 30.5 cm circumference

Gauge:

· Sizes 1 & 4: 9 st = 1 in / 2.5 cm

· Sizes 2 & 5: 8 st = 1 in / 2.5 cm

· Sizes 3 & 6: 7 st = 1 in / 2.5 cm

Begin

With CC, cast on 56 (84) sts in the method of your choice. The sample was made using the German Twist Cast On.

Join to work in the round, making sure sts are not twisted, and place a marker for BOR.

Work in 1x1 Ribbing until work measures 1” / 2.5 cm from cast on edge (about 9 rounds).

Drop CC and switch to MC.

Rounds 1 - 4: knit.

Rounds 5 – 36: Follow the colorwork chart for the corresponding size, repeating the chart twice each round. Catch floats as needed. (Blue represents your MC and yellow represents your CC.)

Drop CC.

Rounds 37 – 40 (MC): knit.

Cut MC.

Heel

Heel Flap

Row 1(RS): With CC, k28 (42). Place the remaining 28 (42) sts on a spare needle, or let them chill on the cord if you are doing magic loop.

Row 2 (WS): sl1wyif, p to end.

Row 3: (sl1, k1) to end.

Row 4: sl1wyif, p to end.

Repeat Rows 3 – 4 twelve (19) more times.

Turning the Heel

Row 1(RS): k16 (23), ssk, k1, turn

Row 2 (WS): sl1wyif, p5, p2tog, p1, turn

Row 3: sl1wyib, k to one st before gap, ssk, k1, turn

Row 4: sl1wyif, p to one st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts have been worked. Note: you will end the last Row 3 with a ssk and the last Row 4 with a p2tog.

Gusset & Foot

Cut CC and switch to MC.

Setup Round: (RS) k to end of heel flap.

Pick up and knit the slipped sts along the side of the heel flap [14 (21) sts], pick up and knit one more st at the instep, place marker for new BOR.

K across previously held sts, place marker.

Then, pick up and knit one st at the instep and pick up and knit the slipped sts along the second side of the heel flap [14 (21) more sts].

K to the end of the round.

Round 1: k to marker, sm, k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before BOR, k2tog, k1.

Round 2: k around.

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 56 (84) sts remain on your needles.

If you have been working with your lower calf measurement, now switch to making the size that corresponds to your foot circumference by either changing your gauge to match the correct size, or decreasing to the correct amount of stitches.

Knit until work hits 0.5” / 1 cm below the top joint of your pinkie-toe.

Switch to CC and knit 1 round.

Switch to MC and knit 4 rounds.

Toe

Switch to CC and cut MC.

Round 1: knit.

Round 2: (k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1, sm) x2.

Repeat Rounds 1 – 2 until you have 28 (32) sts left on your needles.

Remove markers. Separate sts evenly onto two needles and kitchener stitch the toe closed. Weave in ends and block.
